Biography
Once upon a time, when a lifetime of moments seemed to fit comfortably into one single day, three-year-old Marta stepped onto her first stage, to join her older brother and sister. She sang and enchanted everybody, but if you ask her today about that moment she will answer “I felt uncomfortable in the limelight”.
Where she certainly felt very comfortable was around her musical family, who surrounded her constantly with music until she finally was old enough for her first instruments: after the piano, Marta’s choice fell on the guitar – much better to take to school! Composing songs and playing the acoustic guitar became her favourite way of self-expression in her teenage years. At twelve, she discovered the magic of singing and wholeheartedly ventured into it. Marta’s first band was, of course, the garage band Ujmanus, with her older siblings. They started playing for family parties, friends and in the church choir, and soon moved on to play all around their region in events of all kinds.
A long time seems to have passed since these days of blissful exploration, or maybe no time passed at all? Marta certainly came a long way from those first days of music. She went on to study guitar at JBJAZZ and voice with Vânia Fernandes at Hot Clube de Portugal in Lisbon. At Lusíada University of Lisbon Marta continued her musical studies, completing a licentiate degree in Jazz and Modern Music with teachers such as Nuno Costa and Mário Delgado. It was with her graduation that she realized that she had become the first female jazz guitarist of Portugal.
Duarte d’Almeida develops works as a musical performer, in theater company Alpha Teatro, in ASSESTA (Alentejo’s Writers Association), in the project eFabularia from Almada Mundo Association, in publicity, in the company UOU – Uma Ocasião Única and in musical theater.
As a player-author, she leads the band MaZéi, a musical project where folk meets swing through the soul of Portuguese songs, the mysterious body of jazz and the energetic spirit of folk. Alcanchais, a record released in 2017, is the testimony of the coexistence of those worlds.
Musicista is the title that she chose to best define her, (an uncommon word in Portugal, that, beingused in Brazilian-Portuguese, wasgifted to her by her Brazilian friend Ju).

It’s within this poetic and musical tones, and in the midst of the world of stories, that my soul finds itself more found.
Marta Duarte d’Almeida é musicista, multi-instrumentista, tocantautor. Sabe-se que tocanta e toconta-se!
A Música acompanha-a desde o tempo em que num só dia passava uma vida inteira, tendo subido a um palco pela primeira vez com três anos de idade, onde cantou e encantou na companhia da sua irmã e do seu irmão mais velhos. Terá sido neste ambiente musical e familiar que descobriu a primeira forma de se expressar – tocar guitarra. Apesar de, o piano ter sido o seu primeiro instrumento, o mesmo, era muito grande para levar para a escola.
Aos doze anos descobre o fascínio do canto, e aventura-se a entoar canções. A sua primeira banda – banda de garagem – foi com os seus irmãos, Ujmanus. Tudo começou por graça nas festas de família, entre amigos, e no coro da missa.
Estudou nas escolas JBJAZZ e Hot Clube de Portugal. Na primeira, frequentou o curso geral tendo como instrumento principal a guitarra, e na segunda, frequentou aulas de voz com Vânia Fernandes. Na Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa licenciou-se no curso de Jazz e Música Moderna, onde se especializou em guitarra, com Nuno Costa e Mário Delgado. Nas palavras do professor Nuno Costa, “Marta veste a saia! És a primeira mulher guitarrista de jazz em Portugal!”.
Autonomeia-se como “musicista” (palavra oferecida pela sua amiga brasileira Ju – comummente utilizada no português do Brasil).
“A sua singularidade como guitarrista observa-se na sua intuição e na sua técnica, tendo um propósito cantor em cada nota que faz soar”.
Assume-se como musicista-contadora no projeto “Tal Mãe, tal filha”, com Joaninha Duarte.
Desenvolve trabalhos como performer-musical, na companhia Alpha Teatro, na ASSESTA – Associação de Escritores do Alentejo, na eFabularia da Associação Almada Mundo, no mundo da publicidade, na UOU – Uma Ocasião Única, e no teatro musical.
Marta, como tocante-autora, encabeça o projeto MaZéi, onde o folk culmina com o swing, através da alma das canções portuguesas, do corpo misterioso do jazz e espírito enérgico do folk. Há quem apelide “jazz canção” à banda MaZéi. Alcanchais, disco lançado em 2017, é o testemunho destes mundos a co-habitarem.
“É dentro deste registo poético e musical, e no meio do mundo das histórias que a minha alma se descobre mais encontrada”.
